Transaction Splitting

For transactions that span multiple categories:

  1. Import the full transaction normally
  2. Edit the transaction after import
  3. Click "Split Transaction"
  4. Assign amounts to different categories
  5. Save the split

Example: $200 Target purchase → $120 Groceries + $80 Household Items

Recurring Transaction Detection

  • Automatic detection of recurring patterns
  • Rule suggestions for future imports
  • Subscription tracking for monthly services
  • Payroll categorization for regular income

Custom Import Rules

Create rules for consistent imports:

  • Merchant standardization (e.g., all "AMZN" → "Amazon")
  • Automatic categorization during import
  • Account assignment based on transaction patterns
  • Description cleaning for better readability

💡 Pro Tips for Better Imports

Before You Import

  • Clean up merchant names in spreadsheet first
  • Add categories in a separate column if your bank supports it
  • Split large date ranges into smaller chunks for easier processing
  • Keep original files as backup until you're satisfied with import

During Import

  • Double-check column mapping before proceeding
  • Review sample transactions in preview
  • Start small with a week of data to test formatting
  • Verify balances match your bank statements

After Import

  • Categorize immediately while transactions are fresh in memory
  • Set up rules for patterns you notice
  • Export summary to verify everything imported correctly
  • Update account balances if they seem off

❓ Troubleshooting Import Issues

File Won't Upload

  1. Check file size (under 10MB recommended)
  2. Verify format (must be .csv, not .xlsx or .xls)
  3. Try different browser or clear cache
  4. Check file permissions (not read-only)

Dates Import Wrong

  1. Check regional settings in your bank's export
  2. Try different date format in column mapping
  3. Manually fix a few examples and reimport
  4. Contact support with sample of your CSV format

Amounts Don't Match

  1. Check sign convention (expenses positive or negative?)
  2. Look for separate debit/credit columns
  3. Verify decimal separators (, vs .)
  4. Check for extra spaces or characters in amount field

Missing Transactions

  1. Check date range of your export
  2. Verify import date range settings
  3. Look for pending transactions that might not export
  4. Check account filter settings in FinTrack
